Leave room to sit and move

Measure the clear space and note how the door opens. Choose one seating area along a solid wall, keeping a clear route across the balcony. A small folding table can make the space more flexible.

Explore garden planting and lighting.

Combine seating with storage

Choose weather-resistant storage suited to the exposure. A bench can combine seating and storage only when it is designed and rated for both. Keep a maximum of three or four plants, spaced apart. Use wall space where suitable rather than adding more floor pots.

Add a little evening light

Try the layout with your existing furniture first. Add a warm battery lantern or outdoor-rated string lights once you know where you will sit. Check your building rules before fixing anything to walls or railings, and compare the full cost of any purchase.

Keep exploring.
